Understanding Cat Hairballs
Cats have a natural grooming routine which includes the formation of cat hairballs. These are typically unproblematic. Kittens and younger cats, due to their less meticulous grooming, typically have fewer hairballs. However, older cats could be fussier and have a higher likelihood of developing hairballs.

What is a Cat Hairball?
A cat hairball is an accumulation of dead hair and digestive fluids that has developed in a cat's stomach. When cats groom themselves, the hairs they consume accumulate into hairballs in their stomachs. All cats groom themselves by licking at their fur. Little spikes on their tongues are used to catch hairs when they fall out. Due to the barbs on their tongues, which are designed by nature to help trap stray hairs, cats are forced to swallow the hair they groom.

Symptoms of Hairballs in Cats
Observing (and hearing) your cat throw up a hairball can be upsetting. Typical hairball symptoms include hacking, gagging, and retching. Your cat will typically vomit the hairball shortly after these symptoms.
If your cat exhibits any of the following symptoms, be sure to talk to a Pet Expert, as these may be signs of a potentially fatal blockage brought on by a hairball:
- Continuous gagging, retching, vomiting, or hacking without a hairball
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
Hairball Treatments for Cats
A specialized cat hairball treatment paste that includes a laxative and lubricant can be purchased to aid in their gastrointestinal passage. However, this is not typically required. If you do use it, be sure to adhere to the directions exactly.
Hairball cat food is another remedy that works very well. These kibble-based products are very high in fiber to aid in moving extra fur through the digestive system. They also include vitamins and minerals to prevent hair loss and maintain the health of your cat's fur.
