Is Your Dishwasher Air Gap Leaking? Here's How to Fix It

Is your dishwasher air gap leaking? In this article, I am going to show you how you can fix it easily.

Understanding the Problem

First, let’s understand what is happening. There is one hose that goes from the dishwasher to the air gap, and there is another hose that goes from the air gap to the garbage disposal. This second hose can get filled with debris and food deposits. When it gets clogged, the water can’t flow through its proper way and, as a result, it will shoot the water out the air gap.

Fixing the Air Gap

Now that you know why the air gap is leaking water, how do you fix it?

  1. Start by removing the air gap cover.
  2. Next, you will need to remove the air gap insert or cap by pressing on the two clips on the sides. If it is really hard, use two flathead screwdrivers to help you.

Once the cap is removed, you will see two holes. You need to get something through the big one to unclog it, you can do it with an air gap cleaning tool, or you can also use a piece of cable wire like shown in the picture below.

You may feel the restrictions, you need to work it out pushing in and out and twisting until the cable comes into the garbage disposal and you are able to see the wire. That means the line is now clear and the air gap shouldn’t leak anymore.
